9 Management Lessons that everyone should learn from Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion Lannister is a mastermind. He is one of the most knowledgeable man in the series “Game of Thrones”. In a television show which has murders, betrayals and politics at its core, Tyrion is someone who manages to stay one step ahead of all. He has a genius mind and a heart as well which sets him apart from others. Here are few of the lessons I believe everyone should learn from him.

LESSON 1: BE YOURSELF

Do not try to be anyone else. Do not try to act anything other than normal. This becomes evident when he tells to Jon Snow: “Never forget who you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like an armour so that it can never be used to hurt you.” Tyrion is always comfortable being himself. He never forgets that he is dwarf and has his limitations. Knowing and accepting who you are is the very first lesson required for any management. Accept who you are.

LESSON 2: DO NOT TRUST PEOPLE WHO HAD CHEATED THEIR PREVIOUS BOSS

This becomes evident when he is appointed as hand of the king. He fires Slynt from the commander of watch position. Although Slynt had helped the Lannisters in the war, he had betrayed Ned Stark, the previous hand of the king which is why Tyrion fired him. Those who have betrayed once have a natural tendency to do it again. This is particularly helpful in current recruitment times. If someone has betrayed their current boss, chances are they will do it again.

LESSON 3: EARN RESPECT AND ADMIRATION OF YOUR SUBORDINATES AND JUNIORS

Tyrion believes that in order to rule, you need to have admiration of your people. He says to Cersei: “You might find it difficult to rule over millions who want you dead”. Any leader needs people who trust him and admire him. Else the rule will not be prolonged. Every good manager should be respected among his staff.

LESSON 4: BE CAPABLE OF BEING CUNNING YET BE KIND

Tyrion is a genius. He has one of the sharpest minds. He is also capable of devising deadly cunning strategies. But he is also kind and sympathetic. It is good to be innocent. But when situations demand, have the cunning ability to save yourself from being deceived. It takes self control to use this smartness for good of the realm and not to deceive and harm someone. This is something everyone in the corporate world should learn.

LESSON 5: BE WITTY

If I was supposed to select his best quality, it would be this. Tyrion Lannister is very witty. His sarcasm, his humor and his spontaneous answers are a learning for anyone. Tyrion makes sure he is well within his limit and out of danger while joking on anyone. Humor helps in everything. Almost all the problems would become a bit easy by just keeping that sense of humor intact.

LESSON 6: PROVE YOUR HATERS WRONG

Tyrion is often encountered with such situations where people have little faith in him. But he always manages to prove them wrong. He does not give in to their ideologies and proves his haters wrong in numerous situations. Never give in to the hater’s perception and stereotyping. If someone doubts you, they are representing their limitations and not yours.

LESSON 7: KEEP YOUR WORD

Tyrion always keeps his promises. He says: “Lannister always pays his debt.” In today’s world when belief and trust have become a rarity, this quality of Tyrion is a very appreciated one. Your word should have value. People may trust you once based on impressions but for a long lasting relationship, it is very essential to live up to your reputation and keep all the promises that you make.

LESSON 8: KEEP LEARNING

Tyrion explains why he reads so much saying: “A mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge. That is why I read so much.” Just like edge of a sword needs to be sharpened, same way our brain also needs exercise. Reading and learning are the best exercise which will keep our brains sharp. In modern times, when technology is changing on day to day basis, one must keep learning and updating him.

LESSON 9: HAVE HOPE FOR A BETTER FUTURE

Despite losing almost everything and escaping death very nearly, Tyrion finds again in form of Queen Daenerys a way to serve the people of the world by being her adviser. He hopes to serve the rightful ruler this time and hope for a better future. We all should have hope of a better future.

It is hard not to admire Tyrion Lannister after watching Game of Thrones!
